Image by wallyg The glowing bronze of this statue on a rock outcropping near the East Drive at 67th Street reflects the loving pats of countless children and adults who recall the story of a heroic dog. In January 1925, the city of Nome, Alaska experienced an outbreak of diphtheria. At that time, Nome had a population of 1,429 people and there was only enough antitoxin serum in distant Anchorage to treat about 300 people exposed to the disease. A train line did run over 325 miles from Anchorage to Nenana, the station closest to Nome, but Nome was icebound seven months out of the year. Alaska’s two open-cockpit planes were not safe in the frigid and windy weather. A relay of mushers and their dog-sled teams was the only way to deliver the fur-wrapped twenty-pound package of serum to the ailing community 674 miles from Nenana. The route followed the old Iditarod Trail used by mail drivers from Anchorage to Nome (now the route of the dog-sled championships). The 20 teams of over 200 dogs covered the frozen terrain at about six miles per hour, in blizzard conditions with temperatures of 50 degrees below zero. An international audience listened over their radios and read in their newspapers of the race to Nome. The last musher, Gunnar Kasson, and his team lead by Balto, a black and white Alaskan malamute, raced over the frozen tundra in only five days and seven hours – a world record time. Within days after the arrival of the serum, the epidemic, which had claimed five lives, was over. Gunnar Kasson later described the incredible trip to reporters: "I couldn’t see the trail. Many times I couldn’t even see my dogs, so blinding was the gale. I gave Balto, my lead dog, his head and trusted him. He never once faltered. It was Balto who led the way. The credit is his." Balto survived the journey, and toured the United States with the rest of the dog team. On December 17, 1925, 10 months after his arrival in Nome, Balto was present as this bronze statue was unveiled in Central Park. Balto died in 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio, where his stuffed body is on display at Cleveland’s Natural History Museum. Private donations collected under the auspices of the Municipal Arts Society paid most of the cost of this sculpture. Brooklyn-born sculptor Frederick George Richard Roth (1872-1944) received the commission for the statue, which was awarded the 1925 Speyer Prize by the National Academy of Design. A low-relief plaque shows the dogsled team braving the blizzard and bears an inscription dedicating the statue to all of the sled dogs that helped save lives of so many people. From the moment of its unveiling, the sculpture has been a favorite of young park visitors, many of whom come from far and wide to sit astride the dog hero celebrated in several books as well as in Steven Spielberg’s animated film, Balto (1995). The inscription commemorating Balto the Dog reads: "Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dog that relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice across treacherous waters through arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the winter of 1925. Endurance. Fidelity. Intelligence." Central Park was designated a scenic landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1974. National Historic Register #66000538

Image by wallyg William Bradford (May 20, 1663 – May 23, 1752) was an early colonial printer, and the head of a family that included leading publishers for 140 years. In an irony set in stone, the graver marker of the man popularly called “the father of American printing” bears a typo–Bradford was born in 1663, but his tombstone incorrectly reads 1660. The 1863 copy that replaced the weather worn original also bears the original mistake. A cemetery dictum demanded that tombstone duplications be faithful to the originals. Born in Leicestershire, England, he came over to America in 1682 before the City of Philadelphia was laid out. In 1692 William was arrested and tried for sedition in the first case in America that raised the issue of Freedom of the Press. He printed the confessions of faith of the schismatic Quaker, George Keith, that contained material objectionable to the community leaders. He and John McComb, a taverner who distributed the paper, were briefly jailed, and his press was seized. The trial resulted in no decision, based on a split jury, but soon after release he decided to leave Philadelphia. After moving to New York in 1693, he was made the official printer for that colony. Bradford became a Trinity Vestryman in 1703, where created the first edition of the Book of Common Prayer to be printed in America in 1710. When he died at the age of 92, he was interred in the Trinity Churchyard Cemetery. Trinity Church, prominently located at the terminus of Wall Street at 79 Broadway, is the oldest Episcopal church in New York City, having been consecrated on Ascension Day May 1, 1846. Designed by architect Richard Upjohn, Trinity is considered a classic example of Gothic Revival architecture. At the time of its completion, the 281-foot spire was the highest point in New York until being surpassed in 1890 by the New York World Building. The adjoining Trinity Churchyard Cemetery, opened in 1697, is one of three separate burial grounds that make up the non-denominational Trinity Church Cemetery (the others being the Churchyard of St. Paul’s Chapel and the Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum at the Chapel of Intercession). Among the 1,186 interred here are Alexander Hamilton, William Bradford, Robert Fulton (memorial tribute), Captain James Lawrence, Horatio Gates, and Albert Gallatin. There are also memorials to the unknown martyrs of the Revolution buried on the grounds, 16 officers of the Continental Army and Navy buried in the church cemeteries, and to the thousands of Americans who died in prison ships in New York Harbor. Trinity Church and Graveyard was designated a landmark by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1966. National Register #76001252 (1982)

Image by wallyg Reputed to be the city’s oldest coffee house, Caffe Reggio has been serving up since 1927, when the original owner Domenico Parisi was told that his brewing skills would make him more money than his barbershop business was. Parisi is popularly credited with introducing cappuccino to America. Their first of a kind espresso machine was made in 1902. Warm weather brings about the dilemma of whether to sit outside and people watch or get lost inside amid a splendid array of artwork, much of which dates back to the Italian Renaissance period. A dramatic 16th century painting by the Roman master Caravaggio and an antique bench bearing the crest of the illustrious Medici family are among the works on display. Caffe Reggio has been patronized by the likes of Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Jack Kerouac and Joseph Brodsky. It was featured in Godfather II, Next Stop Greenwich Village, The Next Man and the original Shaft. It is not, however, as many tour books claimed, on screen in Serpico. It is just referred to. John F. Kennedy also gave a speech out front in 1959.

Image by wallyg The American Stock Exchange (AMEX), a mutual organization, owned by its members, traces its roots back to colonial times when stock brokers created outdoor markets to trade new government securities. The AMEX started out as such a market at the curbstone on Broad Street near Exchange Place, with the curb brokers gathering through even the harshest weather conditions. By 1900, millions of dollars’ worth of securities were being traded in the streets. Brokers began renting rooms above the street, where they could receive telephone orders and call down to their curb. As trading activity increased, the shouting reached such a high level that special hand signals had to be introduced. In 1921, the New York Curb Market, as it was called then, moved indoors inside and the hand signals remained in place for decades even after the move. In 1929, it became the New York Curb Exchange, and moved its current facilities in 1931. It was not until 1953 that it officially became the American Stock Exchange. The American Stock Exchange is the only primary marketplace in the United States for both equities and derivative securities. The Amex trades more than 900 issues on its primary list. The Amex trades options on 30 broad-based sector indexes and more than 1,000 domestic and foreign stocks, as well as Long-term Equity AnticiPation Securities® (LEAPS®) on 116 stocks. In addition, the Amex is a leader in listing warrants on foreign currencies and indexes as well as hybrid instruments and other structured products. AMEX’s core business has shifted over the years from stocks to options and Exchange-traded funds, although it continues to trade small to mid-size stocks. In 1998, the American Stock Exchange merged with the National Association of Securities Dealers (operators of NASDAQ) to create "The Nasdaq-Amex Market Group" where AMEX is an independent entity of the NASD parent company. Apparently, the city has low water pressure, so pumping it up to a tank and let it drain down by gravity is how they deal with it.

Image by Loozrboy At pretty much any hour of the day in any weather, this store has a guy out front calling out to passersby to come check out their wares. I wonder how well this actually works as a marketing tactic? It’s fairly rare in Toronto, but I do remember another now-departed clothing store further down the strip (where Metropolis looms now) that used to have a guy out front waving a flag and saying "sale, sale, good price, good price". Oh yes, and I totally forgot to mention Kleen Air. Talk about your specialty shops. They don’t mean "dancing shoes" as in ballet slippers or tap shoes. It’s a store full of stripper boots. I’m not sure where the strippers are going to go for their footwear if this place closes down.
